Human Services Partnering with
Non-Profits and
Faith-Based Organizations
|
|
by Jefferson County Human
Services
The Community Assistance Division of Jeffco Human Services has long
realized the value of having a volunteer coordinator, but has not
been able to fund or staff such a position.
Until now.
Utilizing state Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding
to create a volunteer coordinator position, Tennyson Center for
Children, a non-profit residential treatment center in north Denver
which treats children with multiple needs, created a partnership with
Jefferson County Human Services. This individual will be located at
Jeffco Human Services and will coordinate volunteers, but will also
work closely with the faith-based community to generate volunteers.
The Colorado Council of Churches will collaborate with the new
coordinator to match volunteers with the Division's needs. Tennyson
will provide the salary, and the county will provide the office
space.
Tennyson believes in prevention as the best way to tackle difficult
problems faced by the families and children they currently serve.
Their motivation in approaching the county originally was to seek out
better ways to tie the community together with the county and its
efforts to promote prevention strategies. The county wins because the
new position will generate time savings for staff and customers, and
new collaborations with community members such as the faith-based
community where traditionally not many connections have existed.
The county wishes to acknowledge and thank Tennyson
Center and its board for their shared vision.

New Motor Vehicle Fees Now in Affect
|
|
by Pam
Anderson, Jefferson County Clerk & Recorder
To avoid the surprise at renewal, residents should be
aware of late registration fees beginning June 1, 2009, and of the
higher vehicle registration fees beginning July 1, 2009.
Overview
Senate Bill 09-108 was passed by the legislature and signed into law
by the Governor on March 2, 2009, and will require additional
surcharges for each vehicle to fund transportation needs across the
state.
Late Fees
This legislation requires a mandatory fee for late transactions. The
fee will be $25/month for every month past the grace period on your
vehicle, up to a maximum of $100. This will be in addition to the
standard renewal fees.
Please evaluate your vehicle licenses to determine which vehicle or
trailer is not up-to-date and renew when needed. In addition, vehicle
owners may want to consider selling or disposing of vehicles that are
infrequently used, no longer used, or often left with expired
registrations.
Registration Fees
One of the changes that will go into affect is that the fees in this
bill are based on the weight of the vehicle, rather than the age of
your vehicle. This information can be found under the "CWT"
section on your registration.
For more information on how these changes apply to you, visit the Jefferson County Motor
Vehicles Web page on fees. You can also call 303-271-8100.

Jefferson County Open Space Announces Special Public
Outreach at Apex Park
|
|
by Thea Rock, Jefferson County Open Space
Due to reported increases in negative interactions at Apex Park,
located south and west of the City of Golden within the foothills of
Jefferson County, Open Space is looking to our park visitors to place
as many ideas as possible on the table for consideration to determine
if the visitor experience at Apex Park can be improved through a
change in management techniques.
Presently, Apex is a destination park with small acreage and provides
minimal trail mileage over steep terrain for multiple use by hikers,
mountain bikers and equestrians. These reported negative
interactions with other users are due in part to these limiting park
features as well as speed and mode differentials.
A list of ideas generated through user group outreach and public
forums will be maintained in the form of a listening log and posted
on the Open Space Web site.
If you would like to provide your comments, use one of these methods
to submit your comments no later than June 30:
- Mail
written comments to "APEX", 700 Jefferson County
Parkway, Suite 100, Golden, CO 80401.
- Email
your comments using the subject "APEX" to
trock@jeffco.us
- Log
on to the Open Space Web site
and select "News" to find the "Improving Visitor
Experiences at Apex Park" link.
See the full release
for more information on this project and to see a list of dates for
public forums.

Putting the Public Back in Public Health
|
|
by Nancy Braden, Jefferson County Public Health
The Jefferson County Board of Health has approved a
new name for the health department: Jefferson County Public Health.
"The purpose of the name change is to emphasize the public
health aspects of the organization; plus, it's a lot easier to
remember" said Jefferson County Public Health Director, Dr. Mark
B. Johnson, M.D.
The name change and accompanying logo follow a 2008 strategic
planning process that involved focus groups and interviews and
identified a gap in knowledge about what exactly public health is and
what the health department does for the citizens of Jefferson County.
We want to know how much YOU know about Public Health. Take our online survey

We're Not Out of the Woods Yet with Influenza H1N1
|
|
by Nancy Braden, Jefferson County Public Health
The novel influenza A (H1N1) virus took center stage in April of this
year and within weeks had infected people in the United States and
across the globe. Public Health officials around the world sounded
the alarm and the general public had the opportunity to watch from
their living rooms and computer screens a new and potentially deadly
influenza virus emerge onto the world stage.
Fortunately, the severity of illness caused by H1N1 has been fairly
mild and most are able to recover at home without complications; yet
for some the illness has proved deadly and no one really knows how
severe this virus really is. What is known is that the virus is here,
and public health professionals nationwide expect that illnesses and
deaths may continue for some time. Since you, or people around you,
may become ill with influenza it is important to know how to
recognize the symptoms and take appropriate actions.
Jefferson County Public Health continues to be actively involved in
responding to H1N1 influenza A. At this time, our response goals are
to reduce the spread and severity of illness, and to provide
information to help health care providers, government officials and
the public address the challenges posed by this new public health
threat.
To find out about the symptoms, warning signs and how to protect your
family, visit the Centers for Disease
Control Web page on the virus, or the Jefferson County Public
Health Web site.

Lena Gulch Spring Green Event
|
|

by Nancy Braden, Jefferson County Public Health
Sloshing water and ripping chainsaws may not be the noises you would
usually associate with an anniversary celebration, but if you
happened to be at Lena Gulch in Pleasant View on Friday, May 1,
during the health department's ongoing 50th year celebration, that is
exactly what you would have heard.
Health department employees and volunteers, including Commissioner
Faye Griffin (above), all rolled up their sleeves, pulled up weeds,
gathered sticks and donned rubber waders to improve the environmental
health of the area. "Debris obstructed the natural water flow,
and there were downed limbs and garbage in the area as well,"
said Beth Lipscomb, Director of the Administrative Services Division.
"Pitching in and cleaning up this section of Lena Gulch improved
a valuable County resource."
With the trash and debris removed, park visitors and school children
can now enjoy a more pleasing outdoor experience; and wildlife will
benefit from an improved environment.
Next 50th anniversary event: a Public Health Picnic in the Park on
June 17, 2009. Health department employees, invited guests and WIC
Program families will celebrate summer safety, healthy eating and
active living.

2009 Colorado Fatherhood Rally
|
by Kris Kinzli, Jefferson County Workforce Center
Currently, more than 25 million American children are living without
their fathers including two-thirds of African American children.
According to national research, children who grow up without fathers
are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine
times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to
end up in prison. Yet, as these grim statistics mount, a national
trend is brewing to celebrate and encourage responsible fatherhood.
The Jefferson County Workforce Center's Child Support Services knows
just how critical this trend is and has developed its very own
Fatherhood Program. "The Fatherhood Program will assist dads to
identify and overcome barriers they face in maintaining an active
role in their children's lives, becoming and remaining current on
financial obligations to their children, and finding on-going support
in the community," comments Ray Washington, program manager.
This year on Father's Day, groups across the country will hold
symposiums, conferences and events to celebrate dad. In Denver, the Be There for Your Kids
campaign will host the 2009 Colorado Fatherhood Rally on
Saturday, June 20 in the Meadows at City Park.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the rally will include a fatherhood
recognition program featuring Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr.,
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, other notable fathers and the 2009 Be
There for Your Kids Awards winners. The Jefferson County Workforce
Center's Child Support Services Fatherhood Program will sponsor a
table at the event, promoting responsible fatherhood.
For more information, please contact Ray Washington at 303-271-4654
or visit www.jeffcoworkforce.org.
