Can You Help Solve a Crime?

by Sheriff Ted Mink

In late 2010, investigators arrested a suspect in the 2005 murder of Patrick Housand, a 70-year-old Aspen Park resident who had been murdered outside his home. Sheldon Lee Herrington, the victim's former son-in-law, is accused of killing Mr. Housand as he left for work.

The case went unsolved for almost six years until a tip from the public gave investigators what they needed to arrest the suspect. We're still working on other unsolved cases, including the ones listed below. Can your tip help us solve one of these crimes?

nonnie_dotsonNonnie Dotson: Air Force nurse vanished from south Jeffco
This disappearance has troubled investigators for more than four years. The 33-year-old Air Force nurse from San Antonio was visiting her brother in south Jefferson County on November 19, 2006. She was last seen at her brother's house near Kipling and C-470.

Dotson was to report back to the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio two days after she went missing. She had met up with friends at the Grizzly Rose bar in Denver the night before her disappearance, and had visited a dating website for single parents on the morning of her disappearance. Dotson is white, 5'3", 115, with long brown hair and brown eyes.

Stephanie Hart and Nicholas Kunselman: The "Subway homicides"
On February 14, 2000, Columbine High School students Stephanie Hart and Nicholas Kunselman were found dead at the Subway sandwich shop at 6768 W. Coal Mine Ave. in south Jeffco. Hart, 16, had stopped at the restaurant to pick up Kunselman, 15, her boyfriend, at the end of his shift. A coworker later discovered their bodies.

Witnesses saw a young man leaving the Subway store via the back door after midnight.  He was described as a white male, 16-18 years old, about 5'7", 150-170 lbs, clean-shaven, with longer blond hair.

CrimeStoppers is offering up to $2,000, and the Subway sandwich chain is offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.

Sexual assault on boy at The Ridge Recreation Center
On August 21, 2010, a ten-year-old boy visiting The Ridge Recreation Center at 6613 S. Ward Street told his parents he was sexually assaulted in the men's locker room while he was getting dressed after swimming. The suspect is described as a white man with a dark tan, or possibly a Latino man, 5'08" to 5'10" tall, with short, dark hair. The man is thought to be 18-25 years old, and may have a mole near his right eye. Another sexual assault on a 16-year-old boy occurred at The Ridge in April, 2010. Investigators are unsure if these two incidents are related.

Vandalism at Mother Cabrini Shrine
Overnight on November 14, 2010, vandals heavily damaged four statues at the Mother Cabrini Shrine on Lookout Mountain, doing thousands of dollars' worth of damage. The statues may have been shot.

Highway 285 Crashes

In 2010, there were four fatal crashes along highway 285 in Jefferson County. Colorado State Patrol investigators determined that each of the fatal crashes was caused by driver error. Deputies are working alongside the Colorado State Patrol to educate drivers and enforce traffic laws in the area in the hopes of reducing these numbers. In late 2010 and early 2011, the corridor had more law enforcement presence than any other in Jeffco (with both State Patrol and JCSO officers).

Some of our educational initiatives include a partnership with Drive Smart Evergreen/Conifer and the Alive at 25 program in the schools. Our deputies are urged to use traffic stops as opportunities to educate drivers about the recent accidents and appeal to them to drive safely.

Please drive safely and defensively, especially along the Highway 285 corridor. Report drunk or unsafe drivers by calling 911.
